This photo holds a special place in my heart. It brings back memories and inspires contemplation about the meaning of luck.

After a group cruise along the Hawkesbury River, north of Sydney, I decided to return alone to capture the photos I couldn't take with the group. In particular, I wanted to photograph the Sea Eagles soaring along the cliffs.

I hired a small dinghy with a pilot and anchored at a spot I had marked earlier. As I watched, four or five eagles—both mature and juvenile—soared along the cliffs, moving in every direction except the one I wanted. I needed them to follow the natural line of the cliffs, ideally at an angle that would allow me to capture their profiles. From my vantage point on the river below, they mostly showed me their undersides.

After hours of waiting and hundreds of attempts, a juvenile finally flew exactly where I needed it. In that moment, everything aligned perfectly. Capturing just one great photo in a day is all that I hope for, and on that day, I felt truly lucky.
